Medical Weight Loss with Semaglutide
You may have heard of this new medication that has taken the weight loss world by storm – SEMAGLUTIDE! I know I was fairly skeptical when the research kept coming forward on it’s effectiveness for weight loss. However, as I began to observe the results in my patient population I knew this really was something helpful. The weight loss may be slower and less consistent than it is with the HCG Diet. However, for many of my patients the journey to their optimal body composition was easier. Semaglutide helps to take the struggle out of it. We love our medical weight loss programs at The Natural Path.
After being on the lowest dose of .25 milligrams for the last 2 months, Claudia noticed she was fitting into her wardrobe again. The scale was also revealing a downward trend. As we slowly increased her dosage, the pounds keep dropping. One year later, you might not recognize Claudia as she has dropped 76 lbs. The best part of all is that she feels confident and happy in her skin. She has also adopted a new lifestyle diet which is the gift that will keep on giving as she ages.
The Brand Names of Semglutide are Ozempic and Wegovy
Ozempic and Wegovy are two popular “brand names” of an injectable diabetes drug with the active ingredient being semaglutide. Semaglutide has shown to lower blood sugar and spur insulin production. It also slows gastric emptying and keeps you feeling full for longer. The side effect tends to be weight loss. Though the drug’s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, cautions that “Ozempic is not approved for chronic weight management,” doctors are increasingly prescribing it off-label for this use with safety and effectiveness. At our office, we pair Semaglutide with a specific dietary protocol. We prefer to look at this medication as a tool to help you get to your weight goal. Moving forward, you will have the skills to create a lifestyle diet that nourishes your body on a cellular level and maintains your optimal body weight.
Since its U.S. rollout in early 2018, Ozempic has become a Hollywood weight loss drug that is catching on with the general public. The branded Ozempic has a high out-of-pocket cost ($950 or more per month). Personally, I get skeptical when things have the Hollywood Stigma. I prefer to ask … “How can we use this effective medicaiton as a tool?” By pairing it with a healthy diet of clean proteins, low carb veggies and healthy fats 90% of the time – we can begin to create a lifestyle diet. This will actually be the gift that keeps on giving.
Semaglutide Side Effects
Semaglutide is not always without side effects. I have not seen dramatic side effects in my patient population. Perhaps, this is because I help my patients with a specific diet or specific supplements that may be helpful? However, I do read about the side effects often and most of these people do not do a dietary change and often do not stay hydrated. I do feel it is important to have a nutrient dense diet and to stay very hydrated while using this medication. I also feel it is very important to have a lifestyle diet in place so that when you go off of the medication you can MAINTAIN your weight loss. As a physician, I feel that being able to maintain the weight loss is the most important part of the process.
Possible side effects that people report consist of: nausea, constipation, diarrhea, reflux, fatigue and headache. It is thought that 80% of those who take Semaglutide do not have side effects.
