What are Bio-Identical Hormones?
Bio-identical hormones are plant derived and mimic the structure of naturally produced hormones in the body. All of our bio-identical hormone prescriptions are custom made to treat the specific needs of each patient.
What is the difference between Bio-Identical and Synthetic Hormones?
Synthetic hormones are similar in structure, but not identical, to the body's hormones and can lead to adverse reactions or long-term health risks. Synthetic hormones are only available in standard doses and cannot be tailored to fit individual patient needs. Because bio-identical hormones are physiologically identical they cannot be patented by pharmaceutical companies and must be compounded by a pharmacist. What are the benefits of Bio-identical hormones?
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is very effective in replenishing deficient hormones when the body’s production is lacking. Potential benefits include:
Are Bio-Identical Hormones Safe?
We have yet to see any adverse reactions from bio-identical hormones in our practice. While there are no large studies regarding the safety of bio-identical hormones over synthetic hormones, providers and pharmacists view bio-identical as a better alternative when hormone replacement is indicated. In our practice, we always due a full patient history/ family history and use bio-identical hormones with caution in patients who have a family history of estrogen receptor positive cancer.
How do I know if need Bio-Identical Hormones?
Symptoms as well as lab testing indicate the possible need for bio-identical hormones. At The Natural Path, we use blood and/or saliva tests to evaluate your hormone levels. We test levels every 6 months to a year or anytime there is a change in dosing.
Dr. Cara Phillipo and Dr. Robert Madda are highly trained in the use of bio-identical hormones to support women in each phase of life.
