Hormone Therapy for Women in Portland Oregon

Hormonal imbalances can affect a woman at any age.  In general, an imbalance in the delicate hormonal system can cause many symptoms including mood changes, insomnia, fatigue, muscle aches, weight gain, hair thinning, decreased libido, hot flashes, night sweats, etc.

What are Bio-Identical Hormones?

Bio-identical hormones are plant derived and mimic the structure of naturally produced hormones in the body.  All of our bio-identical hormone prescriptions are custom made to treat the specific needs of each patient.

What is the difference between Bio-Identical and Synthetic Hormones?

Synthetic hormones are similar in structure, but not identical, to the body's hormones and can lead to adverse reactions or long-term health risks.  Synthetic hormones are only available in standard doses and cannot be tailored to fit individual patient needs. Because bio-identical hormones are physiologically identical they cannot be patented by pharmaceutical companies and must be compounded by a pharmacist. We most commonly prescribe capsules, creams and surgically implanted pellets.

What are the benefits of Bio-identical hormones?

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is very effective in replenishing deficient hormones when the body’s production is lacking.  Potential benefits include:

  • Decrease in hot flashes
  • Improved vaginal lubrication
  • Increased bone strength
  • Improved sleep, mood, concentration & memory
  • Improved libido
  • Healthier skin

Are Bio-Identical Hormones Safe?

We have yet to see any adverse reactions from bio-identical hormones in our practice.  While there are no large studies regarding the safety of bio-identical hormones over synthetic hormones, providers and pharmacists  view bio-identical as a better alternative when hormone replacement is indicated.  In our practice, we always due a full patient history/ family history and use bio-identical hormones with caution in patients who have a family history of estrogen receptor positive cancer.

How do I know if need Bio-Identical Hormones?

Symptoms as well as lab testing indicate the possible need for bio-identical hormones.  At The Natural Path, we use blood and/or saliva tests to evaluate your hormone levels.  We test levels every 6 months to a year or anytime there is a change in dosing.
