To get the Flu shot or NOT to get the Flu Shot

Should I get the Flu Shot?
This is a very common question that we get asked in our practice from our patients. Whether you see us for primary care, bio identical hormones, HCG Diet or aesthetic medicine everyone wants to know how to best stave off the flu in the winter season.
Truth be told, I am not a "flu shot fan." I am certainly not against it and if a patient really wants one we stock the thimerisol free, single dose version in our office. In a review of last years flu season, it was found that 80% of those suspected to have the flu or influenza really only had a "flu like" virus. When samples were sent to the CDC of those patients suspected to have influenza only 20% actually tested positive for influenza type A or type B.
Not many studies show any great effectiveness with the flu shot. In fact, the only ones that I have seen that show any significant improvement were of course published by the drug companies.
The Flu Shot Preservatives
I also like to warn patients of the dangers of thimerisol (a preservative that contains mercury) in many of the conventional flu vaccinations. Mercury is a known neurotoxin and the amount in the flu vaccine is significant enough (in my opinion) to have harmful effects.
Other Ways to Keep the Flu Away
Studies have shown that those peoople with a high number of CD8 T cells tend to avoid the flu. Vitamin D has been shown to increase CD8 T cells. Patients commonly ask what dose of Vitamin D is best? This varies from person to person. However, based on lab work I often prescribe a dose of between 2000 ad 8000 iu/daily for the average adult. I also recommend patients take Vitamin K2 in conjunction with Vitamin D to help with absorption.
Fire Cider is another nice way to bring immune boosting consituents into your body. To make fire cider, take a quart sized glass jar and put 3/4 cup garlic cloves; 3/4 cup chopped onion, 3/4 cup chopped horse radish and 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper. Add raw apple cider vinegar to the top and let it sit for 2 weeks. Then, strain the liquid and drink 1 tbsp. daily.
Other simple things you can do are eat a healthy diet, get good sleep, wash your hands, keep stress low, exercise, take omega 3's and use oregano oil when you feel something is coming on.
