Doctor ... I have a Sleeping Problem

All too often, I find my patients all up in arms that they just can't sleep a solid 8 hours. They think something is wrong with them and they long for some form of treatment. The truth is that quite a few people wake in the middle of the night naturally.  When this happens, people begin to worry that they are not asleep and will be very tired.  The mind begins to tell stories that really may not hold a lot of truth.  On the HCG Diet Program, we ask our patients to be in bed for 8 hours. This does not necessarily mean you need to be in a deep sleep the whole time.  Resting horizontally is nice and if you sleep through the night or wake for a few minutes to an hour in the middle and then go back to sleep is really okay!

 

Waking in the Middle of the Night

As evolution happens with man kind we find our living patterns have many differences.  For some people, awaking up at 2 am is an evolutionary trait that is still within them.  On occasion, I find myself awake at night for no apparent reason.  I will even get up and go downstairs for some water, maybe read something and then head back to bed and wake in the morning feeling fine.  If I think I will be exhausted the next day and tell myself that story then the chances are higher I will feel that way.

 

Segmented Sleep

 

When you wake in the middle of the night and then go back to bed again you are not "abnormal."  This sleeping pattern is called “segmented sleep” and it is how our human ancestors used to sleep.  From my research, these humans would sleep for 4 hours or so and then get up for 1-2 hours and then sleep another four hours or so.  

 

As human nature advanced and we needed to use our days more efficiently things began to change and many prefer a longer stretch of solid sleep.

Of course, if you wake in the middle of the night and have trouble getting back to sleep again this is certainly a problem and can leave people feeling very tired. If you simply wake int he night for a few minutes to an hour and then fall back to sleep again this can be a normal pattern of segmented sleep.
