Coconut Milk -- Avoid the Preservatives and Do it Yourself
Here are some very simple, easy ways to make coconut milk at home. This is surely the way we do it now ... all three of these methods are extremely simple and easy and you will be free from these common preservatives found in store bought coconut milk ~ cane sugar, tricalcium phosphate, carrageenan, guar gum, coconut water concentrate, natural flavors, etc. I share these recipes with all of our HCG Diet participants as they are so easy to do and are phase III friendly. I even think they make a nice addition to coffee in the morning. You do not even need to open a coconut to make it happen:)
All the "junk" Found in Store Bought Coconut Milks
Phase III of the HCG Diet is a time to learn about making your diet as clean and preservative free as possible. Here are some of the common additives in store bought dairy alternatives.
This is one of my least favorite food additives and it is in so many food items ... especially dairy substitutes. Why do they put this stuff in there? Well it keeps things from separating out and adds a thickness. Unfortunately, it causes a whole host of digestive issues.
Guar gum is another culprit for digestive issues in those with sensitive guts. It can cause gas and bloating. This happens with my 3 year old son. Guar gum is another thickening agent.
In my opinion, coconut milk is already pretty sweet and the sugar is added in there as the third ingredient in most brands after coconut cream and water. At home, you could add some stevia, blend in a date and some vanilla extract.
This is the worst category ever. It is catch all for many, many different things that are "naturally" created. This always scares me when I see it in food because it could me a million different things.
